Wabamun Presentations

In the early days of the Wabamun Watershed Management Council, the Alberta Government made several presentations to the council to inform members about the science and issues that affect lakes in general and Wabamun Lake and its watershed in particular. The following are PDFs of some of the PowerPoint® presentations.

Parkland Lakes Water Chemistry Survey

At the November 2017 WWMC board meeting, Katherine Snihur and Dr. Duane Froese of the University of Alberta gave a presentation on the research that has been done on parkland lakes. The file is a PDF of the PowerPoint® presentation.

Wabamun Lake Watershed 101

A presentation the Alberta Government made to council in 2011 to summarize what is known about the Wabamun Lake watershed in terms of scientific studies. Water quality, nutrient loading, algae growth, the presence of heavy metals in the water and the effects of industry on the lake are discussed. The file is a PDF of the PowerPoint® presentation.

Science and Regulations 101

A presentation the Alberta Government made to the Central Alberta Recreation Lakes (CARL) workshop in 2010 to summarize what is known about the science and issues facing Alberta lakes in central Alberta. CARL is a loose association of lake watershed stewardship organizations, representing the major recreational lakes in central Alberta. The group meets annually at one of the lakes and shares information about what is happening at the lakes and what is being done to preserve and improve the health of those lakes. The file is a PDF of the PowerPoint® presentation.

Point Sources of Nutrients to Wabamun Lake

In 2007 Alberta Environment made two presentation to the council about the effects of nutrient loading on the lake. Nutrients (e.g., phosphorous, nitrogen) are washed into the lake through service runoff and other sources. This first presentation discussed the point sources of nutrients, their origins, implications and potential actions. The file is a PDF of the PowerPoint® presentation.

Non-point Sources of Nutrient to Wabamun Lake

In 2007 Alberta Environment made two presentations to the council about the effects of nutrient loading on the lakes. Nutrients (e.g., phosphorous, nitrogen) are washed into the lake through service runoff and other sources. This second presentation discussed the non-point sources of nutrients, their origins, implications and potential actions. The file is a PDF of the PowerPoint® presentation.

CN Incident: 2007 Update and Future Steps

In 2005, a CN train derailment dumped 560,000 litres of bunker C fuel oil into the lake. This 2007 presentation to the council by Craig Emmerton, Limnologist for Alberta Environment, discussed what had been done up to 2007 to clean up the spill, what was continuing to be done, health advisories, effects on fish and wildlife, and what next steps would be taken. The file is a PDF of the PowerPoint® presentation.
